If your AC quit in the middle of a Phoenix July, you are not in a good position to negotiate. You want it fixed today, the company knows that, and the number on the quote is harder to argue with than it would be in March.
This guide lays out what the common repairs actually cost in the Valley in 2026, what legitimately drives the price up, and how to tell a fair quote from one taking advantage of the weather.
What the common repairs cost
Typical all-in ranges for the Phoenix metro — parts, labor and the service call — on a residential split system. A rooftop package unit usually runs higher because access is worse.
| Repair | Typical range | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor replacement | $150 – $400 | Under an hour |
| Contactor replacement | $150 – $350 | Under an hour |
| Condensate drain clear | $100 – $300 | About an hour |
| Blower motor | $400 – $1,200 | Half a day |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $500 – $1,800 | Half to full day |
| Compressor replacement | $1,300 – $2,800 | Full day |
| Evaporator coil | $1,000 – $2,500 | Full day |
Ranges are illustrative for this template. Replace with figures you can stand behind before publishing.
Why July costs more
Some of the summer premium is real. Emergency and after-hours call-outs carry genuine overtime, rooftop work above 110°F is slower and more dangerous, and distributors run short on fast-moving parts by mid-season.
A capacitor that costs $180 in February can be quoted at $380 in July, and only part of that gap is justified.
The part that isn't: a company booked solid has no reason to sharpen a pencil. If the unit is still cooling somewhat and you can wait two days, you will usually get a better number.
Three lines worth reading on the quote
Is the diagnostic fee credited? Most Valley companies charge $80 to $150 to diagnose. Reputable ones credit it against the repair. If the quote doesn't say so, ask before they start.
What's the warranty on the part, and on the labor? Different numbers, and the second matters more. A one-year part warranty with 30 days of labor means a failed install is your problem in week six.
Is it a repair quote or a replacement pitch? Over roughly $1,500 on a system more than ten years old, replacement is a fair conversation — but it should be presented with both numbers side by side, not as the only path.
Repair or replace
The rough rule honest techs use: multiply the repair cost by the age of the unit. Over about $5,000, replacement is usually the better spend.
- Under 8 years: repair almost always wins.
- 8 to 12 years: depends on the repair, and whether it's the compressor.
- Over 12 years: get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote.

A spring tune-up runs $80 to $150 and catches the two failures behind most July emergencies: a weak capacitor and a clogged condensate drain. Both are cheap in April and expensive in July, which is the whole argument.
